Elephant seals can hold their breath for up to 2 hours. This means that the Southern elephant seals regularly dive up to 4,921 feet deep to eat. They can grow to be become over 20 ft long and weigh 8,800 lb. But they are not called elephant seal's because they weigh so much, it's because of there noses. For food they eat penguins.

Elephant seals are large, oceangoing earless seals in the genus Mirounga. The two species, the northern elephant seal (M. angustirostris) and the southern elephant seal (M. leonina), were both hunted to the brink of extinction by the end of the 19th century, but the numbers have since recovered.

Elephant seals are the largest of all seals. Male seals can be 20 ft long and weigh up to 8,800 pd. But pinnipeds aren't called elephant seals because of their size and color. They take their name from their trunk.

There are two different types of elephant seals which are northern and southern. Northern elephant seals can be found in Calfornia and Baja California. Southern elephant seals live in sub-Antarctic and Antarctic waters.
