In the Central Valley, we are in a prolonged drought and have had a tremendous shortage of rain. Now that it is the rainy season again, we have water coming from the sky that could be used, if we could only gather and save it. What inexpensive way can you think of to gather, store and be able to use the rain water.
When answering, suggest new and creative ideas and be sure to consider: keeping the water fresh for months at a time, mosquitoes, how much water is needed to water plants for one month, how much water would actually make an impact on a typical household?

You could put a punch of cups on the ground or a giant bowl

You can use a water filter and then water the plants

You can store the water from the rain in a water filter, so the water is purified and can be put to good use

You can put a sifter on top of the bucket so mosquitos can not get in the bucket.

you can put oil around the container or put a sifter over it so mosquitoes can't get into the container of water.

We can have an open jug that has a hole in it that has a pipe connecting to it. Then the water flows from there to another storage for water that has a filter inside, or at least somewhere in between the jug and storage. Of course, mosquitoes can't get through the filter. From there the water flows through your house clean and filtered. (I hope this answer is realistic.)
